Why should I change the name of the default admin user immediately after the Joomla installation?

The default Super Administrator account which is created during the Joomla installation, is called “admin”. You do protect it with a password at the final steps of the installation, but still leaving the username to this well known default value exposes 50% of the security of the username/password combination.

This is why we advise you to change the name of the default Super Administrator account to something more difficult to guess. By doing so, you will improve the security of that account significantly. For making the username change, please follow these directions:

  • Log into the back-end of your Joomla
  • From the menu select User Manager
  • Select the 'admin' user record
  • Change the value in username. (Good usernames contain both letters and numbers.)
  • Save the changes

Joomla is a powerful software that is easy to work with once you have the right host to support you. Before you lose any more time with the wrong host, check out the SiteGround Joomla hosting offer.
